Next Sunday, 16th of August 2015, the current English champions, Chelsea, will travel north to the Etihad Stadium to measure forces with Manchester City for round 2 of the English Premier League.
The new season did not start the way both José Mourinho and Chelsea’s supporters were certainly hoping. After being defeated by Arsenal for the FA Community Shield final, the Blues failed again to make a stand in their first league match against Swansea last Saturday. Chelsea didn’t have the best of days but managed anyway to open the score on the 23rd minute of the first-half, thanks to a goal from the Brazilian international midfielder Oscar. Nevertheless, just a minute later Swansea got back in the match when the newcomer Andre Ayew scored the equalizer. The match had a frantic pace and on the next minute, Chelsea scored again, this time thanks to an own goal from the Argentinean defender Federico Fernandez. Everything seemed to be in place for Chelsea to snatch the first of win of the season, but Thibaut Courtois’ red card early in the second-half and Swansea’s subsequent goal from the penalty spot complicated things for the London team and, in the end, José Mourinho’s men might consider themselves lucky to have gotten away with a point from the clash against the Swans.
Next weekend’s match will certainly be a very complicated one for Chelsea, but at the same time presents a very good opportunity for the team to bounce back from the less impressive moment they are currently going through.
As for Manchester City, after some inconsistent performances during the pre-season matches, the Citizens granted an important win from their visit to The Hawthorns.
Two goals from Yaya Touré, who was in doubt for the match due to some injury problems, opened the way to a quiet and well-deserved win for Manuel Pellegrini’s men. Manchester City were in control throughout the entire match and showed some great indicators for the matches to come.
Gael Clichy and and the newcomer Fabian Delph will miss next weekend’s match since they remain sidelined due to injury.
