Next Friday, 14th of August 2015, Manchester United will travel to Birmingham to measure forces with Aston Villa at Villa Park for round 2 of the English Premier League.
The Red Devils' opening match of the season at the Theatre of Dreams was nothing short of a nightmare. The narrow 1-0 win, thanks to Kyle Walker’s own goal in the first-half, was the probably the only positive thing United could take from the match itself.
Louis Van Gaal’s men had an overall bland performance and if one looks at the match stats, one can easily understand how ineffective and predictable the Red Devils were throughout the match. United have only placed one shoot on goal and they must also thank their new arrival Sergio Romero for securing the three points in the last ten minutes of the match. The Argentinian international put up some quality saves and showed some cold blood throughout the match.
United’s usual number 1, David de Gea, was on the stands and it is very possible that he will never be part of Van Gaal’s choices again. There is still some unrest at United’s kingdom and some changes will certainly take place in the team before the end of the transfer window, with some players leaving and some others coming in.
Next Friday’s match at Villa Park will surely not be an easy one and, although United’s recent record against Aston Villa is fairly positive, if the Red Devils fail to improve their game, they will need to work extra hard in order to grant the three points.
As for Aston Villa, after being only defeated once during the pre-season matches, they have started the new campaign with a very important win at the expenses of the English Premier League newcomers, Bournemouth. The match at Dean Court was, however, far from easy with The Cherries leaving a very positive image behind. The Villans were, nevertheless, more effective than their opponents and their summer signing, Rudy Gestede, netted in the winning goal on the 72’ minute of the match.
Aston Villa lost some important players during the summer but they have, on the other hand, managed to bring in some quality footballers, such as Jordan Ayew and Rudy Gestede, that will surely be valuable assets for Tim Sherwood throughout this long and complicated season.
