Louis Van Gaal’s future at Manchester United has been hanging by a thread for the majority of the season it seems but he just about manages to hang in there. Despite missing his influential skipper since February, United gained one of their best victories of the season with a 1-0 win at Manchester City. The absence of Wayne Rooney was missed sorely in the Europa League against Liverpool but domestically they’ve performed well. Rooney is expected to return to full training within the next 10 days and he’ll be looking at the clash against Tottenham later in April for his return. He will be devastated to miss the game against his former club. The international break came at the wrong time for United but LVG will be hoping his side can carry on from where they left off. They’re just 1 point behind Manchester City and although well out of the title race they are on the cusp of a top 4 place.
Everton had one of their worst performances of the season before the majority of the squad left for international duty as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at home to Arsenal. Everton are unachieving this season as they sit in 12th place and are closer to the bottom three than they are the top four. The best they can hope for this season realistically is attempting to overtake Liverpool who sit 6 points ahead of them. The blessing for Everton is that they have played less games than all of the other sides in the league bar Liverpool so they have more points up for grabs. Everton’s home form has been the problem as they average exactly 1 point a game at home which gives them the 4th worst away record in the league.
In the past 6 meetings they’ve shared the points as United have won 3 and Everton also have won 3. Despite being 6 places above Everton in the league, Everton have 2 players above Manchester United’s top goal scorer in the league. Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney both have 7 Premier League goals this season but midfielder Ross Barkley has 8 alone. Rumoured Manchester United target Romelu Lukau has scored 18 league goals this season and the Belgian powerhouse could well be on his way out of Goodison Park if he continues his good form at Euro 2016.
Wayne Rooney and Luke Shaw’s return to full training looks imminent but both will definitely be out of Sunday’s match. Marcos Rojo could return home from international duty with Argentina later than the rest of the squad which could see him miss out of the squad. Gareth Barry will be serving the 2nd match of his suspension after receiving a red card in the FA Cup victory over Chelsea. His replacement Mo Besic was carted off at half time against Arsenal and Roberto Martinez could well alter his midfield for the trip to Manchester United.
