Next Saturday, 12th of September 2015, an inconsistent Manchester United will measure forces with Liverpool at the emblematic Old Trafford for Round 5 of the English Premier League.
Louis Van Gaal wanted to avenge last season’s defeats against the Swans but things did not work as he had predicted at the Liberty Stadium two weeks ago. Manchester United had from more ball possession percentage and more attempts on goal but in the end it was the Welsh who had reasons to celebrate. The former Valencia’s attacking midfielder Juan Mata opened the score for United right after the break but two defensive distractions cost the Red Devils the first defeat of the new campaign. The Red Devils’ back line didn’t have the best of days once again and experienced some difficulty in dealing with Ayew and Gomis, who ended up by scoring Swansea’s goals.
The fact that Adnan Januzaj left on loan on the last day of the transfer window was somewhat surprising, especially if we have in mind that he netted in United’s winning goal at Villa Park almost one month ago.
Michael Carrick and Phil Jones are in doubt for next weekend’s clash against Liverpool because of injury.
As for Liverpool, The Reds suffered a surprising defeat against West Ham at Anfield Road in the last round of the English Premier League. After a narrow win over Bournemouth and a goalless draw at the Emirates Stadium, Brendan Rodgers’ men failed to react to the Hammers early goal and ended up losing by an unconventional 3-0.
West Ham deserve a lot of credit for what they achieved at Anfield Road two weeks ago, but Liverpool’s players have also to blame themselves for what happened during the match. Coutinho’s red card and several childish defensive mistakes have, in a way, cost The Reds the first defeat of the season.
Last season, Liverpool’s record against Manchester United was not particularly brilliant as they lost both of matches, but they are certainly hoping to replicate their performance from March 2014, when they smashed the Red Devils by 3-0 at the Theatre of Dreams.
